The different stages

Maison Bäumer works with workshops of particular excellence, each with their own expertise and opinions: jewelers, diamantaires, lapidaries, setters and polishers who enable creations to achieve a perfect result and thus, reconcile dreams with reality.

This tailor-made expertise is important for both the creator and the client in order to give rise to an exceptional creation, elaborated from a traditional savoir-faire of choice, values that absolutely reflect those of Maison Bäumer and our exceptional Parisian workshops and our jewelry store.

Designing a piece of jewelry requires going through different steps, listed below:

The drawing

The majority of jewelry is first designed by a creator based on their inspiration. This design can also (and increasingly) be done on a computer.

The Wax Model

Once the drawing is complete, a model maker interprets it in 3 dimensions, meaning they sculpt it in wax while adhering to technical requirements. At this stage, the computer can also create a 3D vision of the jewel that will be used for its production.

Lost-Wax Casting

The previously created wax model is then entrusted to a founder. It is placed among other wax models on a casting tree, also called a sprue. This sprue is then molded in special plaster into which the founder injects molten metal under high pressure. The high temperature and pressure melt the wax, which flows out through a hole left at the bottom of the mold, and the metal replaces the wax to form the skeleton of the jewelry.

It is then necessary to let the plaster mold cool before breaking it to retrieve the raw jewelry blanks. These, still attached to the casting tree, are then cut and reworked in the workshop to improve their technical finishes.


Molding

After the previous step, the jeweler obtains a metal model, often in silver, which is again entrusted to the founder so that they can proceed with the definitive molding. This mold, made of rubber, allows for as many wax castings as desired to automate production.

Casting

The wax castings from the previous step are then again placed on a casting tree and plastered for lost-wax casting. However, the metal used is the one desired for the final piece of jewelry (i.e., gold for Bäumer Vendôme).

The resulting casting, called a sprue, is reworked in the workshop. The jewels are cut from the tree, smoothed, and massaged to remove imperfections. Moreover, for rings, if the ordered ring size is not that of the casting, it must be modified.

Polishing

The jewels are then polished to finish smoothing them and make them shiny.

Setting

If the jewel is to include stones, all previous steps concern the skeleton of the jewel (also called the mounting, which is the metal part of the jewel).

The setter must then fix the stones on the mounting according to the desired type of setting (prong, bezel, half-bezel, pave, etc.).

Rhodium Plating

For white gold jewelry, a rhodium plating is added to make the jewel shiny.

Hallmarking

All jewelry weighing more than 3 grams must be hallmarked, meaning they must receive two hallmarks: that of the Master (i.e., the workshop) and that of the State (which guarantees the metal's fineness, i.e., 375 for 9K gold and 750 for 18K gold).
